Garden Sculptures

Gardens change throughout the year, as plants come and go with the seasons. A garden sculpture can add interest, structure, and colour – especially during the winter months when plants are less able to do so.

My ceramic garden sculptures are created by stacking multiple modular pieces each of which is a 30-sided rhombic triacontahedron. The modules come in a variety of sizes and finishes and can be stacked in 2 different ways, either directly on top of each other in a tower, or in a zig-zag arrangement.

Either way, the pieces are tailor-made to be stacked over a central metal pole. The pole can either be stuck directly into the ground or mounted on a plinth. I can provide a plinth at additional cost, or you may have something you’d like it to sit on.

The sculptures are intended to be displayed outdoors, hence they are made with stoneware clays, with engobes and glazes which are frost resistant.

They are equally suitable for indoor display with a slight adaptation to the mounting system.

The price of each module depends on its size and finish, and this in turn affects the price of the sculpture. The modules can be stacked in any combination of size and colour, although the larger sizes are much heavier than the smaller ones, so care is needed to ensure the sculpture isn’t top-heavy and that the heavier pieces do not put too much strain on the lighter pieces.

As a guide, the prices below are based on the tower sculpture shown in the first photograph, which has the same “weathered bronze” glaze on each piece. The sculpture pictured is made up of 14 modules, each one slightly smaller than the one below. The overall height of the sculpture is approximately 150cm.

So, the sculpture shown costs £1,190 with an additional cost of the metal pole of £5 per metre. Delivery and installation are additional charges and will be agreed upfront.

I will work with you to design the best sculpture to fit your space. I will then create a quote and predicted timescales.

I do have a small stock of sculptures available for purchase as they are, but generally, I make to order. Bespoke sculptures generally take around 6 weeks from order to delivery, the exact time depending on the number of pieces and the finishes chosen.

Sculptures can be tailored to your requirements. You specify colours, finishes and the sizes and combinations you’d like. These are just some of the colours available.

Commission A Garden Sculpture

To commission a garden sculpture, please contact me directly using the form on my contact page or email me at commissions@cathygreenceramics.com. We will have a conversation to discuss your specific requirements, following which I will provide you with a detailed quote and an idea of how long it will take to create your bespoke sculpture.

Other Commissions

I am always delighted to be approached to create commissions. It may be something specific for a special gift or bespoke to fit your décor. It may be a different size or colour of something in my range, or something completely different. I relish a challenge and a problem to solve! And it is such a pleasure to be able to turn somebody else’s vision into reality.

Following initial contact, we will meet (either in person or online) to discuss what it is you’d like me to create. I will then explore the possibilities of fulfilling your brief and prepare a quote. This stage can be iterative since I may have questions which I need you to answer before I can give a more accurate estimate. I will make suggestions and give you alternatives when I think there may be a better solution. There are often many ways of achieving the desired effect, and I will help you identify the one which best suits your taste and budget. This may include creating maquettes and test pieces to enable you to envision your finished creation. Once we have agreed on the details of the brief, I will give a timescale and cost estimate.

Case Study: Lamp Bases

Cathy Green Handmade Ceramic Lamp Base Commission

I was asked to create two matching bespoke lamp bases which would be made to house specialist battery packs from which the lamps would run. I met with the client who showed me one of the battery packs and we discussed the size, shape, colour, texture, finish, etc. that she was looking for. Once I understood her requirements, I researched possible clays and explored designs that would support the battery pack. Whilst she had a particular size, shape, and colour in mind, she was open to suggestions regarding the finish. Having found a suitable clay, I then produced small sample pieces to show her alternative finishes. These physical pieces helped her decide exactly how she wanted the finished pieces to be, and we agreed on the design. I then quoted a price and schedule, to which she agreed, and I got to work. I kept her informed during the making process since by their very nature ceramic pieces can take some time to come to fruition. A couple of months later I delivered the pair of lamp bases to a very satisfied customer.
